A summary of recent changes on the Friesland waterways sent in by Linda Compton

Johanfrisokanaal – the bridges have been replaced by aquaducts except for the one at Warns  and the bridge by the Johanfrisosluisen.

Heeg – Visitors’ harbour has been enlarged and improved but still has a holiday atmosphere. The very helpful harbourmaster will tell you where to moor in busy periods and is hoping to get an additional shower/toilet block built in the near future. Electricity is now 16amp and charged by the day.

Stavoren – The Geementehaven has been extended by building a basin next to the new Co-op situated beyond the Koebrug which is now manned from 09:00 to 20:00 April to September. The Johanfrisosluizen now has two lock chambers but still gets busy at weekends. The new chamber has pontoons that float with the changing water level so you can tie off and take it easy!

Woudsend – has a fabulous restaurant called Vis en Meer, it is so good that booking is recommended especially at weekends!Makkum – The Gementeehaven now has electricity included in mooring fee but still only one water point. Sadly, the tile factory is no longer open to visitors. There is a €5 toll for passage through the sea sluis and bridge. Very good fish bar at southern end of Vissershaven, just past the toilet block.

Workum – There are now two supermarkets, Aldi and Poetz. From the main square, go towards the kanaal, over the bridge and turn right at end of road.Kuperus Watersport has new owner and is now called Watersport Workum but is just as good.
